Mathematics at St Mark’s

At St Mark’s, we are committed to delivering high-quality Mathematics Education that ensures all children develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We follow a mastery approach to teaching Maths, guided by research and recommendations from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Having embedded this approach across the school, we are now focusing on sustaining and refining our teaching to ensure every child thrives.

Our Approach to Teaching Maths

Mastery for All: We believe that every child can succeed in Maths with the right support and opportunities. Concepts are taught in small, structured steps to develop confidence and competence.
Resilience & Independence: We encourage children to embrace challenges and develop resilience in their mathematical thinking. Mistakes are seen as learning opportunities.
Reasoning & Problem-Solving: Every lesson includes activities that develop reasoning and problem-solving skills, helping children explain their thinking and apply Maths in real-life contexts.
Skills for Life: We ensure children are well-prepared not only for their educational journey but also for real-world situations where Maths plays a vital role.
Love of Learning: We aim to spark curiosity and enjoyment in Maths, helping children see the beauty and relevance of numbers, patterns, and logical thinking.

Times Tables and the Year 4 Multiplication Check

A strong grasp of times tables is crucial for success in Maths. In Year 4, children take the national government multiplication tables check (MTC), which assesses their knowledge of times tables up to 12x12.
To support this, we provide access to Times Table Rock Stars, a fun and engaging online platform where children can improve their speed and accuracy. Pupils can earn certificates for their achievements, and we regularly hold school-wide competitions—with some classes even winning pizza parties for their fantastic progress!

Supporting Your Child at Home

Parents play a key role in developing children’s confidence in Maths. Here are some ways you can help:
• Encourage your child to use Times Table Rock Stars regularly.
• Play games involving numbers, such as board games and puzzles.
• Look for Maths in everyday activities, such as cooking, shopping, and telling the time.
• Support them in explaining their reasoning when solving problems, rather than just finding the answer.
By working together, we can help every child develop a positive mindset towards maths and equip them with the skills they need for the future.
