FRENCH AT ST MARK'S
We want our pupils to love French and we inspire them to aspire to be interpreters, translators or to work abroad. We want our pupils to remember their French learning, communicate clearly and embrace the language opportunities they are given.
Intent
We want our pupils to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages and find them enjoyable and stimulating. We aim to prepare our children to become global citizens and provide them with different opportunities to experience and develop cultural capital. Our curriculum develops pupils’ aspirations so that they strive to be the best that they can be. We carefully plan the subject knowledge, skills and vocabulary, so that our students have the tools to be successful in learning and in life. Our French curriculum promotes curiosity and a love and thirst for learning another language and cultures. We aim to enrich our pupils' time in our school with memorable experiences.
Implementation
Our school follows the Rising Stars French programme of teaching which we have chosen as it supports the teaching staff with their knowledge, understanding and pronunciation as well as the children. It is able to develop the children’s skills with French progressively through regular taught lessons using the high- quality foreign languages curriculum. French is taught in each year group in key stage 2 weekly. This ensures children acquire a bank of vocabulary organised around topics. They ensure development is progressive as they build on previous knowledge from units already studied. Resources are added to further enrich the scheme and provide hooks to enable retention.
Impact
We aim for all of our children to leave St. Mark’s equipped with the French skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at KS3 and for life as an adult in the wider world.. We monitor French through work scrutinies, learning walks, pupil and staff voice. All of this information is gathered and reviewed. It is used to inform further curriculum developments and provision is adapted accordingly.
